Will Team USA bring home the gold?

The men's and women's Olympic basketball teams are just a few wins away.

Welcome to 1010XL Weekly!

This week’s biggest story: the 2024 Paris Olympics Games.

Through the first 11 days, Team USA has compiled 86 medals, the most by any country. Noah Lyles (track), Simone Biles (gymnastics), Katie Ledecky (swimming) and Scottie Scheffler (golf) are among athletes who have won gold for the United States.

This weekend, the United States’ men’s and women’s basketball teams could add to the scoreboard. A'ja Wilson and the women’s team will face Nigeria in the quarterfinals on Aug. 7; LeBron James and the men’s team will face Serbia in the semifinals on Aug. 8.

  • 🏈 Jaguars WR Gabe Davis. The former UCF star is feeling right at home through the start of Jacksonville’s training camp. He and Trevor Lawrence are “trying to build that chemistry each and every day,” Davis said Monday. “I feel like we got our slants down pat. He kind of hits me where I want him every single time and our slim routes are really successful.” The big-play receiver may benefit from a more well-rounded route tree after being pigeonholed as a deep threat in Buffalo. Davis is still working his way back from a 2023 knee injury, but Doug Pederson said he plans to “get him out there” for the Jaguars’ first preseason game this weekend. -Gus Logue

  • 🏀 Team USA F Kevin Durant. “Slim Reaper” is the most decorated Olympian on the squad, having won three Olympic gold medals and adding a FIBA World Championship title. At 35 years old, Durant’s contributions to this year’s team coming off the bench has been nothing less than spectacular. Having recorded double-digit points in Team USA’s group stage games, expect the two-time NBA Finals MVP to showcase his dominance in a big way as the United States men’s basketball team looks to take home gold. -RJ Saunders

  • ⚾️ Marlins SS Xavier Edwards. Miami’s shortstop has been on an absolute tear. He is batting better than .400 over the last month. The former Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp star hit for the cycle on July 28. Edwards is one of the few bright spots in the Marlins’ depleted lineup. -Andrew Gibson

  • 🏈 Jaguars pass rush depth. Third-year defensive end De’Shaan Dixon suffered a knee injury during Monday’s training camp practice. He spent last season on the practice squad but had a chance to make the 53-man roster this year as the team’s fourth or fifth edge rusher behind Josh Hines-Allen, Travon Walker and Trevis Gipson. Dixon had a lot of fans within the building; it’ll be disappointing if he ends up not getting the opportunity to carve out a role. Expect Arik Armstead to take some snaps on the edge this season to make up for the lack of depth there. -Gus Logue

  • 🏀 Team USA C Joel Embiid. Following a 15-point, 8-rebound, 5-assist exhibition game against Germany, there was a level of excitement about the former NBA MVP (who has citizenship in Cameroon and France) being a part of Team USA in Paris. However, that joyfulness from fans has disappeared and has been replaced with disappointment with the big man’s production. NBA legend Charles Barkley believes the Sixers star is out of shape and it’s the cause for his poor play. Whatever the reasoning, the Unites States will certainly need Embiid to step up now as the squad enters the medal rounds. -RJ Saunders

  • ⚾️ Braves OF Adam Duvall. Duvall has been benched since the Braves traded for Jorge Soler. The 35-year-old is seeing the short side of a platoon with only one start in the month of August. Duvall has struggled mightily in 2024 with a batting average of just .185 and a 32% strikeout rate. -Andrew Gibson
