The Magic make a splash

Orlando signed veteran guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope in free agency.

Welcome to 1010XL Weekly!

This week’s biggest story: NBA free agency.

Though contracts won’t become official until Saturday, the league’s tampering window opened Sunday evening, allowing free agents to negotiate with front offices.

The Magic made their move early by securing Kentavious Caldwell Pope to a three-year, $66 million deal that includes a player option for the third season.

  • 🏈 Jaguars EDGE Travon Walker. The former first overall pick is one of Jacksonville’s quiet offseason winners. The hiring of Ryan Nielsen as defensive coordinator — and the addition of Arik Armstead in free agency — could unlock his game, and Walker has expressed to the Times-Union how motivating it was to see Josh Allen and Trevor Lawrence sign their respective big-money contracts. Plus, Walker and Allen recently joined the league’s top pass rushers at Sack Summit, an annual camp hosted by Von Miller, Maxx Crosby and Cameron Jordan. No. 44 is just scratching the surface after registering double-digit sacks in 2023. -Gus Logue

  • 🏀 Magic SG Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. The Magic snagged the Denver Nuggets’ best perimeter defender from last season in NBA free agency. With KCP now expected to start in Orlando’s backcourt with Jalen Suggs, either can be assigned to guard the opposition’s best scorers. This move also gives the Magic the outside shooting threat they so desperately needed. It should also provide an uptick in offensive efficiency for the star duo of Paolo Banchero and Franz Wager. -RJ Saunders

  • ⚾️ FSU head coach Link Jarrett. Jarrett received a new extension this week, just two years into his seven-year contract with FSU. The Seminoles (49-17) made a 26-game win improvement this year and reached the NCAA semifinals at the College World Series. -Andrew Gibson

  • 🏈 Jaguars TE Evan Engram. CBS Sports’ Jared Dubin recently ranked Engram 11th among NFL tight ends. Though the seven-year veteran led his position with 114 receptions last season, Dubin noted that Engram also averaged a career-low 8.4 yards per reception. Plus, he averaged 5.8 catches per game before Christian Kirk’s Week 13 injury and 8.3 catches per game after the fact. There’s no doubt that he’s a Pro Bowl-caliber player, but I agree with Dubin that regression could be coming for Engram in 2024. -Gus Logue

  • 🏀 Orlando’s superstar recuitment. After losing out on Paul George and Klay Thompson, don’t expect the Magic to make a major move in terms of bringing in a third star this offseason. Despite Orlando boasting draft assets and cap room, this isn’t a team that’s going to simply throw money around because they have it at their disposal. This squad still needs a few things, and a solid starting-caliber point guard who can be efficient from outside may be something they still need to address. Many of the top free agents have signed elsewhere but there are still productive role players Orlando can acquire, like Washington’s Tyus Jones or Philadelphia’s Kyle Lowry. -RJ Saunders

  • ⚾️ Marlins infielder Tim Anderson. Batting just .214 this season, Anderson was designated for assignment on Tuesday by the Marlins. His career has taken a jarring downfall. He was an All-Star in 2021 and 2022 with the White Sox. -Andrew Gibson
