WHY did the Jaguars trade Trevis Gipson?

Jacksonville was very active in the past week as it trimmed its roster to 53 players.

Welcome to 1010XL Weekly!

This week’s biggest story: NFL roster cuts.

The Jacksonville Jaguars and the 31 other teams had to trim rosters down from 90 players to 53 by Tuesday afternoon. The biggest surprise by Jacksonville was its decision to trade defensive end Trevis Gipson to the Seattle Seahawks. On one hand, the Jags got a sixth-round pick for someone they signed just a few months ago — on the other, the remaining pass rush rotation is as thin as ever.

  • 🏈 Jaguars DE Myles Cole. Part of the Jaguars’ decision to trade away Gipson was its confidence in Arik Armstead, who is returning from offseason surgery and is expected to play considerable snaps on the edge. But the team has also liked what it’s seen from seventh-round rookie Myles Cole, who recorded 5 tackles and 2 pressures in the preseason. “It's hard to find 6'6", 280 pounds that runs 4.6 and has 36 and 7/8 arm length,” general manager Trent Baalke said Tuesday. “They're not just dropping off trucks every day here.” Cole joins Armstead, Travon Walker and Josh Hines-Allen as the only defensive ends listed on Jacksonville’s initial depth chart. -Gus Logue

  • 🏀 Grizzlies G Ja Morant. It’s amazing how one of the most electrifying players we’ve seen in quite some time, who had an Allen Iverson-type impact in terms of leading a culture shift in the NBA, has matriculated to the back of minds. This will be a guy to keep your eye on this season, as well as this Memphis squad. ESPN currently has the Grizzlies finishing 9th in the West. That’s very interesting for a team that’s not far removed from being near the top of the conference. They may not become a top-three seed this coming year, but will certainly be in the mix of tough teams within that tough Western Conference. -RJ Saunders

  • ⚾️ Rays LHP Jeffrey Springs. The Rays are having a disappointing season based on their expectations, but they are getting some reinforcements for their starting rotation. One of those is the return of Jeffrey Springs who recorded a season high 9 strikeouts Tuesday night at Seattle. It's a positive step for the Rays lefty who is back after recovering from Tommy John surgery in 2023. -Andrew Gibson

  • 🏈 Jaguars CB Christian Braswell. Perhaps the biggest surprise from Jacksonville’s roster cuts was the news of cornerback Christian Braswell being waived. The second-year pro had a solid training camp and one of the more memorable plays of the preseason (a fumble-six that was overturned). Braswell was a candidate to make the team and backup Darnell Savage in the slot, but instead he will likely be added to the practice squad assuming no other team claims him off waivers. -Gus Logue

  • 🏀 Nets G/F Ben Simmons. Nowadays, few put any stock in the former first overall selection. It may be time to start wondering if Simmons will even be in the NBA following this season. The 2024-25 season is the final year of Simmons' five-year, $177 million contract, making his performance crucial for his future in the league. However, it doesn’t feel as if he’s going to be able to give the Nets 65 games this year. If that’s the case, it’s hard to see him on an NBA roster next year. -RJ Saunders

  • ⚾️ Marlins SS Xavier Edwards. The Marlins placed Edwards on the injured list with a back injury on Monday. Edwards missed the final two games of the Marlins' weekend series against the Cubs. It's a tough blow for the former Jumbo Shrimp star who had hit .356 since taking a full-time role in Miami at the beginning of July. -Andrew Gibson
