Can the Miami Hurricanes go all the way?

The Canes had a convincing start to the college football season.

Welcome to 1010XL Weekly!

This week’s biggest story: Mario Cristobal’s Miami Hurricanes.

The Canes came away with a convincing win over the Gators to start the 2024 college football season. Cristobal is under plenty of pressure to get good results, but with perhaps the most talented roster in the ACC and an impressive quarterback in Washington State transfer Cam Ward, Miami is well-poised make noise in the 12-team playoffs later this season.

  • 🏈 Miami Hurricanes. We’ll have seperate “pro football” and “college football” sections starting next week… for now, the attention is on the U. Miami embarrassed Florida in the Swamp, 41-17, in Week 1 to make its case as the best team in the state. Mario Cristobal is hoping to live up to the hype and lead the Hurricanes to its first national championship game in over two decades. -Gus Logue

  • 🏀 Houston Rockets. This Houston team seems like they’re ready to make the next step. They have a solid young core that includes Tari Eason and Cam Whitmore, two budding stars in Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun, and a young head coach in Ime Udoka who is steering that ship in the right direction. They’re still a far cry from where they were during the James Harden era, but don’t be surprised if they are in the mix for a playoff spot towards the end of the regular season. -RJ Saunders

  • ⚾️ Braves RHP Spencer Schwellenbach. The Braves have found their next home-grown ace. Schwellenbach features a six-pitch arsenal that has racked up more than 100 strikeouts since his promotion to the big leagues in May. The 24-year-old right hander has a sparkling 2.89 ERA over the last month. He’s giving off vibes of Spencer Strider 2.0. -Andrew Gibson

  • 🏈 The Gators and the Noles. While spirits are high in South Florida, college football fans in rural central Florida have not enjoyed the start to the season. The Gators are 0-1 after being pummeled by the Canes at home while the Noles are 0-2 after losing to Georgia Tech and Boston College. The college football playoffs already feel like a lost cause for Florida and FSU, but hey — at least the rivalry week game will be funny to watch. -Gus Logue

  • 🏀 Denver Nuggets. The Western Conference continues to improve and there are several young teams that are now beginning to make their presence felt. With that, it’s hard to see the Nuggets continuing their dominance within the conference as they’ve done in years past. Denver has lost a lot of defensive experience over the last couple of seasons — more specifically, wing defense — which is going to be important when facing teams such as the Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Timberwolves and Dallas Mavericks. -RJ Saunders

  • ⚾️ Rays 2B Christopher Morel. Morel was a key return piece for the Rays in the deal that sent Isaac Paredes to Chicago in late July. He hit a home run in his first at-bat with Tampa but has struggled since with a batting average of .197. The Rays recently moved him to the leadoff spot in hopes of finding a spark. -Andrew Gibson
